I grew up in Minnesota and took Summer trips up North to “cabins” and out East to “cottages”
in Wisconsin. Along the way I have many fond memories of the Classic supper
club. When I say classic I mean, the relish tray with olives, carrots, radishes,
celery and if they are fancy scallions with a homemade dipping sauce. White
puffy potato rolls with scoops of butter or packaged butter pats would
accompany the garden salad with homemade Blue Cheese, Thousand Island or French
dressings preferably served in a “Lazy Susan” so you could have some of all
three. Your steak would come on a silver broiler plate with a steak knife and a
baked potato rolled in salt, wrapped in
foil with a gob of butter melting into the cracks. Out came the “Lazy Susan”
again with sour cream, bacon bits, scallions and cheese. After dinner the grown
ups would get Pink Squirrels, Brandy Alexanders or Grasshoppers which we would
beg for spoonfuls of not realizing they were laden with alcohol.
That’s my idea of a Supper Club.
So I asked the listeners of my Weekly Dish Radio show where their
favorite classic supper clubs are and here is the list for the next time you
are craving a hint of your childhood memories.
Make sure to order the ice cream
drink.
